Sunlight, heat, and humidity shape testosterone, estrogen, cortisol, and sleep. Why vitamin D deficiency is still common in Florida \u2014 and what to do about it. Simplistic Wellness, Lutz FL.
Sunlight drives vitamin D synthesis, and vitamin D behaves like a steroid hormone with receptors in the testes, ovaries, pituitary, thyroid, and brain. Adequate vitamin D supports higher total and free testosterone, healthier ovulatory cycles, and bone density. But Florida's climate cuts both ways: air conditioning, sunscreen, skin pigmentation, higher body fat, and summer heat avoidance make vitamin D deficiency common even in the Sunshine State, while heat stress raises cortisol and fragments the deep sleep during which most testosterone and growth hormone is released. Testing 25-hydroxy vitamin D alongside a full hormone panel is the only way to tell a sunlight problem from a hormone problem.
